Joseph Duemer is Professor of Literature Emeritus at Clarkson University in northern New York state. His most recent book of poems is Magical Thinking from Ohio State University Press. Since the mid-1990s he has spent a good deal of time in Vietnam, mostly Hanoi. He lives with his wife Carole & five terriers (four Jack Russells & one Patterdale) on the stony bank of the Raquette River in South Colton.

    In all your self-portraits
    you’re holding on
    to the things of life
    more than the things
    are holding on to you
    the things don’t care
    about your uses for them
    that’s understood
    but I would like to see
    your open hand afraid
    and naked of all objects
    applauding itself
    as it should

    1. You caught me intellectualizing even as I was trying to deflect that tendency. Perhaps the latest sets of photographs provide a partial answer to your tweak & a further opening for my continuing path.
