. . . has won a prize from the American Literary Review.

Here is what Joanie Mackowski, who judged the poetry contest, thought of the winning poem, “Lake Surface Full of Clouds”:

“Stretching its keen observations and minutely choreographed sentences over the advancing paw prints of its lines, “Lake Surface Full of Clouds” makes language ductile and makes the reader recall the animal and chemical pleasures of reading. This poem finds an atomic pulse: ‘thing & song// in their wild fullness full’.” The poem will appear in the Spring 2012 issue of ALR.

  1. Hey, Congratulations Joe! It is a really a lovely poem. Was it part of the fall cycle? I know I read it earlier. Ductile? Off to the dictionary.

  2. I don’t think it was in that group — mush have shown you a draft.

    • Joe — I saw the Clarkson announcement and I want to congratulate you again. And I congratulate myself too. I’ve really enjoyed your poems and hearing you read them. Now my taste in poetry has been confirmed by a panel of experts. I sure miss chatting with you.

  3. Congratulations, Joe, and great to see you back. Would love to read the poem.

    • Once the poem comes out in the journal, I’ll see about linking to it or distributing it in a way that won’t undercut the American Literary Review’s legitimate interests. Also, it will be in my next book!
