Postcard Collage Project Update

I have now sent postcards to the following poets:

  1. Ed Mycue
  2. Harvey Hix
  3. Michael Waters
  4. Laura Jensen
  5. Ed Mycue
  6. Reginald Shepard
  7. David Graham
  8. Amy Hauber
  9. Robert Dana
  10. Jonathan Mayhew (4.17.2008)
  11. Peter Money

My immediate goal is 100 cards, though I expect there to be many repeats — this first batch is just to introduce the lucky recipients to what I’m doing. You can see the cards — both sides — by clicking the words Postcard Project in the extreme upper right of the Sharp Sand header.

Later: Cards are going out today to Jonathan Mayhew & Peter Money, neither of whom I know except through correspondence. My acquaintance with Peter predates the internet & I’m sorry that we have dropped out of contact. Ironically, when we were corresponding regularly, Peter lived on the West Coast; when he moved to Vermont — one state over — we somehow lost contact.

A stray thought occurred to me while writing Jonathan’s card this morning — there is never going to be enough room on a single card to complete a thought. Which is good. My usual problem is the infinity of the page, whether paper of electronic. The postcard will always be too small. Will always require a follow-up.

Connections

I wonder if there is any connection between this & this. Me, if I had one of those drug plans & a serious disease, I’d make sure I died at work & that before I died I was publicly ill — wheezing, coughing, collapsing, & pissing my pants in public, all the while explaining to my co-workers that because of rapacious drug companies & the radical right’s cult of the “free” market, I couldn’t afford the drugs that would make my death more comfortable for me (or perhaps extend my life) & less objectionable to them. Truly, these are Ayn Rand’s insurance plans.

Cutting Board

I wanted to mention our new cutting board, custom-made by Matt Christie. Matt has his own blog, Pas Au-Delà & is also a contributor to Long Sunday. I found out about his woodworking skills because Scott McLemee, my favorite cultural critic, mentioned Matt on his blog, Quick Study. Confused? Doesn’t matter, just look at this beauty. You can contact Matt through his blog, linked above. The board, even with shipping & a bottle of oil to treat the surface, cost about half as much as would something similar in a retail kitchen shop. A rather woody picture, now that I look at it — oak cutting board on a cherry table in front of a pine chair.

Grackles

Huge mixed flock of common grackles, redwing blackbirds, and starlings in the still-bare maples today. Rain & sleet this morning, giving way to steady rain out of a black sky.

War Criminals

It is remarkable, to say the least, that former Attorney John Ashcroft was shocked by the deliberations in the White House on how to torture specific suspects. “History will not look kindly . . .” The US has been ruled by criminals before, but not to my knowledge by an organized gang of war criminals & profiteers. John Ashcroft felt called upon to reprove their behavior. Later: Digby’s discussion catches the awful, bitter vomit flavor these people produce.
