The first cool enough night
I open the windows
just to listen to the sounds
of no air conditioning

the stars take up their Volga
Boatman imitations
the moon still paddles upstream
we are all human again

and though undressing for centuries
there’s still no nakedness
in sight no end

of blood or bodies
the balance broken
then barely resumed.
