we’ve had pulled over
our own eyes has wholly
obstructed knowledge

as if we took the empty shell
for the whole bivalve
how could death be if life did not

precede it life was always
first and only birth and death
either side of a swinging door

as if we’ve all forgotten how
to speak that other language
we know
