But It Still Handled Like a Pig

I had one of these VW busses in the 1980s when they were still pretty cool. It was a fabulous camper. Built-in cuppboards, huge amount of room in the back to sleep. Carole & I had some memorable nights in the San Diego Mountains & east into the desert in the thing. A fantastic vehicle once you parked it. Unfortunately, driving it was an uncomfortable & always dangerous adventure. The worst steering & suspension ever invented & if you ever hit anything head-on, the bottoms of your feet would be your first line of protection. In a side wind it was almost completely unsteerable. Still, looking at this picture makes me deeply nostalgic.

Perfect When Parked

    Wow! Cool picture, Joe.

I don’t care if they were death on wheels, they were the perfect vehicle for the era.

Yeah, & I lived to tell the tale. I freaking loved that thing. That push-up roof was remarkable. We’d park out in the desert & lift it up, catch a little breeze. Some of the best nights of my life.
