Michael Berube

I’m sorry to read that academic blogger Michael Bérubé is hanging up his blogging shoes. (Or would that be hanging up his blogging gloves?) I sometimes found his blog a little arch, but I haven’t found anyone else who so clearly & passionately lays out the sort of progressive politics I believe in. And since I was talking about God in my last post, I’d like to link to his penultimate blog entry, which describes the young Bérubé’s encounter with a “lawn preacher” at the University of Virginia. We had lawn preachers at the University of Washington, too; I wish I’d had the mother wit to address one as Bérubé did. He exactly delineates what I take from Christianity & what I reject. And if you want to be moved, delighted & uplifted — weren’t those Sydney’s criteria for poetry? — go to Bérubé’s blog & search on the word “Jamie.” Jamie is Michael’s son & has Down syndrome. I wish I were as smart as Jamie. And as articulate as his father. The good news is that Professor Bérubé is quitting blogging to work on books. Hasn’t he written enough for any respectable professor already? Waiting for these to appear will be like checking his blog, except it will be longer between posts.
